The Prime Minister – Head of Government, has ordered the suspension of the demarcation process of the Ma Mbet Mbet National Park and ordered the setting up of a high-level committee to visit the Mayo-Kani division to understand the grievances of the population regarding the Park.
The committee will also educate them on the objectives of the park
The decision was taken during an interministerial meeting chaired by PM Joseph Dion Ngute to examine the prevailing situation and seek peaceful solutions to the tension which has developed around the area.
The consultation meeting was convened by following the outbreak of tension on the February 7, 2025 in Mayo Kani Division over a routine demarcation of the Ma Mbet Mbet National Park.
Secretary General of the Far North Governor’s office, Evariste Atangana Zoa, said a faction of the population around the demarcation zone protested fearing an eminent demolition of their houses.
Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute and a cross section of members of government examined the situation in detail, noting the origin of the grievances expressed by the population and identifying solutions to calm the situation.
One of the main decisions taken after the discussions is that a high-level delegation will set up to visit Mayo Kani Division in order to give the right information concerning the Ma Mbet Mbet National Park and examine the points of discord raised by part of the population.
The Ma Mbet Mbet National Park created on the 7th January 2020, with the objective of protecting the migration corridor of elephants, in order to keep the population safe, protect biodiversity and develop tourism in Mayo Kani division.
