The Deputy National Director in charge of programs, STEIN Miriam WEZUI, has urged companies to engage actively in preventing, raising awareness, and responding to gender-based violence (GBV). She was speaking in Yaoundé on December 5, 2024, during the presentation of the Charter of Commitment to Combat GBV, part of the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV.
Key Objectives of the Charter
1. Promote a Culture of Dignity, Inclusion, and Equality**:
Signatory companies commit to protecting the dignity and rights of every employee, fostering a culture of inclusion and respect.
2. Ensure a Safe Work Environment:
The Charter promotes policies to prevent GBV and ensure the physical and emotional safety of employees.
3. Enhance Community Impact Against GBV:
Companies are invited to support community initiatives, raise awareness, and collaborate with local organizations.
Types of Commitments
Each organization will define its commitments based on its resources and identity, structured around three main axes in collaboration with CARE Cameroon.
1. Employee Training and Awareness:
Focus on educating employees about GBV through training sessions, awareness campaigns, and educational materials.
2. Clear Internal Policies:
Develop and implement precise policies to prevent GBV and support victims, including confidential reporting procedures and sanctions for perpetrators. Policies should be regularly reviewed and updated.
3. Community Prevention and Support:
Encourage companies to integrate GBV prevention in communities, establish partnerships with local organizations, and participate in public awareness campaigns. Actions must respect human rights and gender equality standards.
The event took place in the presence of the personal representative of the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Family, Benjamin YENE, who reassured participants of government support to enable an environment free of GBV. The event was attended by both directors and personnel from various companies.
By adopting the Charter of Commitment, companies can play a crucial role in the fight against GBV, fostering safer workplaces and communities.
