Children suffering from sickle cell stand greater chances of having a stroke at some point in their lifetime, health experts in Cameroon say.
Stroke is a major health problem in Cameroon, affecting people across all age groups. About 1/4 of the country’s population is exposed to the health problem, with 90% cases preventable, according to health experts.
As the country observes the 2024 World Stroke Day, young people have been cautioned against having children without proper medical check up. The experts say a good number of such children are born with sickle cell anemia, and exposed to many health problems, including a high risk of having a stroke at some point in their lives.
“ Stroke is not a health issue for a particular age group, although people who are advanced in age are more likely to be affected . Children with sickle cell are particularly predisposed to having stroke that is why we must prevent the birth of more children with the health condition,” Dr. Dalle Kotto Frederic told CRTV Web.
The 2024 World Stroke Day is observed around the globe on the theme “Greater Than Stroke.” This year’s theme emphasizes community support and encourages active lifestyles to reduce risks associated to stroke.
Early Warning Signs
Health experts say a stroke can occur when blood flow to the brain is blocked or there is sudden bleeding in the brain. There are two types of stroke ; ischemic stroke — the most common type, and Hemorrhagic stroke, a less common type of stroke.
Five major warning signs of the health emergency have been identified including sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the face or in one arm or leg, sudden confusion, sudden trouble speaking, or trouble understanding speech. People who suddenly have trouble seeing in one or both your eyes or sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or lack of balance or coordination may also be experiencing an onset of the health condition.
“ If someone has any of these symptoms, they need to be rushed to the hospital where doctors will perform tests to confirm whether or not the person is having a stroke,” Dr. Dalle Kotto Frederic said.
Uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, obesity, lack of activity, excessive intake of alcohol, drugs and prolonged use of oral contraceptives also predisposes people to stroke.
A stroke is a medical emergency which can cause lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or even death.
The World Stroke Day observed every 29th October across the globe is a usually an occasion to raise awareness about health problem, their causes, and the importance of prevention.
