MINESEC and KHPC Sign Agreement to Enhance Technical Education in Cameroon

In a significant step towards advancing technical education, the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) and the Kikot-Mbebe Hydro Power Company (KHPC) have formalized a partnership agreement focused on enhancing the quality of vocational training in regions impacted by the Kikot-Mbebe hydroelectric project,this Friday September 27,2024.

This collaboration aims to provide critical resources for local educational institutions, including the upgrading of infrastructure, the training of teachers, and the development of new curricula tailored to the hydroelectric sector’s demands. By doing so, the initiative seeks to equip young Cameroonians with relevant skills, thereby boosting local economic growth and addressing educational inequalities.

The signing ceremony took place at the Distance Education Center in Yaoundé, attended by the Minister of Secondary Education Nalova Lyonga  and the General Director of KHPC,Christophe Avognon.

Key Objective of the Patnership

The agreement outlines several key objectives:

Enhancing Educational Pathways: Focus on developing a technical education pathway aligned with the hydroelectric project.

Reducing Gender Gaps: Efforts to bridge the educational divide between genders in vocational training.

Improving Infrastructure: Upgrading school facilities to support quality education.

Equipping Institutions: Providing necessary training equipment to enhance the learning experience.

Strengthening Teacher Skills: Supporting ongoing professional development for educators in the region.

Commitment from MINESEC and KHPC

MINESEC has committed to facilitating the administrative processes necessary for the agreement’s successful implementation, involving school leadership and ensuring resource availability in beneficiary institutions. Additionally, the ministry will promote the new training opportunities created through this partnership.

For its part, KHPC will allocate the required human and financial resources, host internships for students and teachers, and actively engage in promoting careers related to the hydroelectric sector. The company has also pledged to prioritize the best-performing graduates for employment opportunities with its contracting partners.

About Kikot-Mbebe Hydro Power Company

Established in September 2023, KHPC is responsible for the design, development, construction, and operation of the Kikot-Mbebe hydroelectric project on the Sanaga River, which boasts an installed capacity of 500 MW. The project includes a retention dam, a power generation facility, and high-voltage transmission infrastructure, with ownership shared between the State of Cameroon and the EDF Group.

This partnership marks a pivotal moment in the quest to enhance technical education in Cameroon, aligning educational outcomes with market needs and fostering a generation equipped to tackle future challenges in the hydroelectric sector.
