AFCON 2025: Africa’s Top Eight on Recess ahead of Quarter finals

The round of 16 matches of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 are now over. Teams have a two day window to recuperate before getting back to the pitch for quarter final matches.

So far, of the 24 teams that participated, lodged in six groups from A-F, 16 have already left the competition, only 8 are still in the race including:

Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, Algeria, Nigeria, Mali, Egypt and title holders Côte d’Ivoire.

The first group of eight left after failing to cross the group stage and eight others were knocked out at the round of 16.

At this level of the competition, 44 matches have been played with 110 goals scored as oppose to 113 during the AFCON 2013 in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Widest goal difference is 4-0 in favour of Nigeria against Mozambique during the round of 16 match same as in 2023 but back then two matches had similar results.

Seven red cards have already been issued to players in various stages of the competition.

As teams compete for the trophy, stickers are also in the race for the golden boot. So far, the highest goal scorer is Morocco’s Brahim Díaz with 4 goals in 4 matches.

He is closely followed by 6 players with 3 goals each, including

Ademola Lookman (Nigeria)

Lassine Sinayoko (Mali)

Ayoub El Kaabi (Morocco)

Mohamed Salah (Egypt)

Riyad Mahrez (Algeria)

Victor Osimhen (Nigeria)

Cameroon’s best scorers are Christian Kofane, Junior Tchamadeu have two goals each and have both played three matches each.

The team Cameroon is already in Rabat fine-tuning their winning strategy under the supervision of Coach David Pagou ahead of their clash at 8pm this Friday January 9, 2026 against the hosts, the Atlas Lions of Morocco, with the hope of improving on their statistics.
