The significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education took center stage during a recent forum organized by UNESCO in Yaounde, Cameroon. The event, held in observance of the 2025 International Day of Education, focused on the theme “AI and Education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation.”

According to Paul Coutéré, Regional Director of UNESCO for Central Africa, as AI-driven systems become increasingly sophisticated, it is crucial for educational systems to understand the concept and its implications. This understanding is particularly important in today’s era of rapid technological acceleration.

Armand Claude Abanda, Director of IAI, emphasized the need to integrate AI into Cameroon’s educational system. However, he noted that it is equally important to educate the population on how to use AI and its benefits, which complement human intelligence.

Hilaire MPUTU, Regional Coordinator for Education of UNESCO Yaoundé, also shared insights on the boundaries between human intention and machine-driven actions. By exploring these topics, the forum aimed to encourage reflections on the power of education to equip individuals and communities to navigate, understand, and influence technological advancements.

The Conference had as objectives to:

– To raise awareness among educators, policymakers, and the general public about the potential benefits and challenges of AI in education.

– Provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss the implications of AI on education and identify potential solutions.

– To encourage the integration of AI into educational systems in Cameroon, while ensuring that its benefits are equitably distributed.

– Build the capacity of educators and educational institutions to effectively use AI and other digital technologies to improve learning outcomes.

By achieving these objectives, UNESCO aims to support the development of education systems that are responsive to the needs of the digital age, while promoting the values of inclusivity, equity, and social justice.
