In a bid to regulate and revitalize the advertising sector in Cameroon, Minister of Communication and President of the National Advertising Council, René Emmanuel Sadi, has urged stakeholders to ensure the implementation of vital policies. This call to action was made during the first ordinary and extraordinary board meeting of the National Advertising Council for the year 2024.
The Director of Private Media Development and Publicity of the National Advertising Council, Ngankak Kameni René Kisito, echoed the Minister’s sentiments, stating that the council will work tirelessly to implement these policies by 2025. This renewed focus on advertising regulation is expected to have a positive impact on the sector.
Advertising Laws in Cameroon
In Cameroon, advertising is regulated by Law No. 88/016 of December 16, 1988. This law outlines the rules and guidelines for advertising practices in the country. However, the implementation of these laws has been a challenge, with many advertisers failing to comply with the regulations.
Challenges Facing the Advertising Sector in Cameroon
Despite the government’s efforts to regulate the advertising sector, several challenges persist. These include:
– Lack of Enforcement: The lack of effective enforcement mechanisms has led to widespread non-compliance with advertising regulations.
– Limited Infrastructure: The advertising sector in Cameroon faces significant infrastructure challenges, including limited access to technology and trained professionals.
– Competition from Foreign Advertisers: The Cameroonian advertising sector faces stiff competition from foreign advertisers, who often have more resources and expertise.
The Minister’s call to action and the council’s commitment to implementing vital policies are steps in the right direction. However, addressing the challenges facing the advertising sector will require sustained efforts and collaboration from all stakeholders.
