EDF Cameroon and the Rural Electrification Agency (AER) have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in a ceremony attended by the Minister of Water and Energy, the Minister of Economy, Planning and Territorial Development, and the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, along with other high-ranking officials from Cameroonian institutions. This partnership marks a significant step forward in improving electricity access for rural communities.

For 20 years, EDF (Électricité de France), a global leader in decarbonized electricity production, has been a key player in Cameroon’s energy development through its subsidiary, EDF Cameroon. The company is dedicated to enhancing electricity access and has already provided low-carbon solutions to over 1 million residents, addressing the growing electricity demand amid economic and demographic growth.

Key Aspects of the Memorandum Of Agreement

– Project Goals: The MOU focuses on developing an ambitious rural electrification project that aligns with the country’s Rural Electrification Development Plan and AER’s roadmap, which has promoted rural electrification since 1998.

– Implementation Plan: The project will involve deploying 100 mini-grids across the national territory, generating 30 MW of renewable electricity, and establishing 20,000 new connections. This initiative aims to provide sustainable solutions to the electricity access challenges faced by many rural communities in Cameroon.

– Village Selection and Infrastructure: AER will facilitate the selection of villages that will benefit from this project while overseeing the construction of necessary infrastructure. EDF, contingent on securing grants, will construct a pilot project in the village of TÊTE D’ÉLÉPHANT (Eastern region), which will serve as a model for future installations.

Olivier Fesquet, Director General of EDF Cameroon, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to partner with AER for this essential project. Rural electrification is a priority for our company, and we believe this initiative will significantly contribute to the socioeconomic development of the affected regions.”

The representative of AER also highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration with EDF is a major advancement for our mission to improve electricity access in Cameroon. We firmly believe this project will bring sustainable benefits to rural communities and enhance their resilience.”

The signing of this MOU represents a strong commitment from both parties to work together to transform the lives of rural populations in Cameroon through electrification.
