In a historic ceremony, the new National Assembly Complex of the Republic of Cameroon was officially inaugurated. The event was presided over by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Honorable Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, representing the Head of State, and Zhang Quingwei, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, representing the Chinese President.
The construction of the new complex, which began in 2019, was made possible through a protocol agreement signed between the Governments of Cameroon and China in 2017. The project was necessitated by a devastating fire that ravaged the old National Assembly building in 2017, rendering it irreparable.
A Symbol of Friendship and Cooperation
The new National Assembly Complex is a testament to the strong friendship and cooperation between Cameroon and China. The complex, valued at 55 billion CFA Francs, was a gift from the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Cameroon.
The Speaker of the National Assembly emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating that it marked a historic moment in the bilateral relations between the two nations. He praised China’s unwavering support for Cameroon, highlighting that “China has always been on Cameroon’s side during difficult and happy times.”
A State-of-the-Art Complex
The National Assembly Complex boasts impressive architecture, with three main compartments: the Plenary Hall, which can accommodate 400 people, a 15-story General Secretariat Building, and a Banquet Hall. The complex also features a separate building to house the fire department and the Gendarmerie detachment of the National Assembly.
This project is a significant milestone in the bilateral cooperation between Cameroon and China, and it is expected to further strengthen the ties between the two nations.
