Congratulatory messages have been pouring in from around the globe to America’s President-elect, Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 US Presidential election.
It is a historic comeback for the former US President who beat Democratic candidate and current Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris.
Trump had taken lead in the polls, but got the final victory after winning key states of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania to become the country’s 47th President. The President-elect secured 295 electoral votes, while his opponent, Kamala Harris, got 226 electoral votes.
America’s new President becomes the second in US history to get a non-consecutive victory, after Grover Cleveland who was the 22nd and 24th US President. Donald Trump is now the 45th and 47th President of the US.
As he inched closer to victory, Trump addressed supporters at a rally in Florida in the early hours of Wednesday, thanking them for their support.
He promised to bring a “golden age” to the United States, and praised what he termed “the greatest political movement of all time”.
French President, Emmanuel Macron, Israeli PM, Benjamin Netanyahu, British PM, Sir Keir Starmer, Hungarian PM, Viktor Orban, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Italian PM, Giorgia Meloni, Spanish PM, Pedro Sanchez, and a host of other world leaders have congratulated Trump on this historic victory.
The Man, Trump
Donald Trump goes into history as the 47th President of the United States following his victory in the country’s 2024 elections.
The politician, media personality, and businessman was born in Queens, New York, on 14th June 1946.
In 1971, the President elect took over management of his father’s real estate company, and renamed it “The Trump Organization.” He would later break down the business into many different companies, overseeing all activities even from the White House when he became president in 2017.
While in office, Donald Trump signed a major tax reform into law, and supervised a reduction of federal regulations. He also increased military expenses, advocated for aggressive border and immigration control, criminal justice reform, and the reduction of prescription drug prices amongst other things.
The Republican nominee, 79, takes office for the second time, becoming the oldest person to be elected President of the United States.
Impeached twice
Donald Trump’s election comes one-year after he faced criminal charges for crimes committed from 2017-2021 during his first term as President of the US. He is the first American president to have faced criminal charges for crimes committed during his first mandate and after leaving office.
He was being charged for his attempt to overturn his 2020 election defeat, the Georgia election case, falsifying business records in May and mishandling classified documents.
The President-elect is the only president in American history to be impeached twice by Congress. He was first impeached on December 18, 2019, and on January 13, 2021. He was however acquitted on all count in both cases by the senate.
After braving all odds, America’s President elect is now getting set to take office for the second time.
