A significant milestone has been achieved in Cameroon’s journey towards promoting disability rights. The Steering Committee for the Project to Support Strengthening Disability Rights, Accessibility, Inclusive Services, and Non-Discrimination in Cameroon has officially launched Phase 2 of the initiative.

Key Achievements of Phase 1

The project, which began on July 20, 2022, under the United Nations Partnership for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD), has already made notable strides. Key accomplishments include:

– Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD): Cameroon’s ratification of the CRPD has paved the way for reforms in national legislation to better protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.

– Revitalization of the National Committee for the Rehabilitation and Socio-Economic Reintegration of People with Disabilities (CONRHA): The project has enhanced CONRHA’s visibility and effectiveness among stakeholders.

– Capacity-Building Efforts: Training has been provided to various stakeholders, including government actors and organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), to promote political participation and advocacy for disability rights.

– Distribution of CRPD Copies: 3,000 copies of the CRPD were ceremonially distributed to government officials to increase awareness and understanding of disability rights.

Phase 2 Objectives and Funding

Phase 2, secured with $500,000 in funding, aims to continue the momentum. The Steering Committee will guide its implementation in alignment with government policies. The meeting, co-organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs and UNESCO, presented the objectives and work plan for Phase 2, ensuring stakeholder engagement and effective implementation recommendations.

As an advisory body, the Steering Committee plays a crucial role in ensuring the project’s success. Its functions include developing plans, identifying and addressing risks, providing strategic oversight, and making key decisions.

The launch of Phase 2 reinforces Cameroon’s commitment to creating an inclusive society for all. With the Steering Committee’s guidance and the project’s momentum, the country is poised to make significant strides in promoting disability rights.
