The catastrophic floods in Mayo Danay have left a devastating mark, claiming 11 lives, injuring 18, and displacing nearly 180,000 people. With 40,000 homes destroyed, the scale of the destruction is overwhelming.

These grim statistics were shared by the Senior Divisional Officer, Jean Lazare Ndongo Ndongo, during a key meeting with UN humanitarian actors, led by OCHA, to strategize relief efforts and disaster management.

The floods in Mayo Danay, particularly in Yagoua, one of the hardest-hit subdivisions, have unleashed a humanitarian crisis of staggering proportions.

So far, the disaster has claimed 11 lives and affected nearly 200,000 people.

The devastation is widespread, with 44,700 homes destroyed, not leaving out the over 103,000 hectares of agricultural fields submerged. Some 13 secondary schools along with 185 primary schools left flooded.

In response to this catastrophe, local authorities have swiftly implemented urgent measures to resettle displaced victims and are working closely with the central government through detailed reports.

The Senior Divisional Officer of Mayo Danay, Jean Lazare Ndongo, has reassured the public that a coordinated response is underway, involving local authorities, government agencies, elites, and NGOs to provide effective assistance.

Particular attention is being given to the most vulnerable populations, including an estimated 30,000 pregnant women and children, whose safety and well-being remain a top priority.

Authorities are making concerted efforts to ensure these groups receive the care and protection they need as the region grapples with the aftermath of this devastating flood.
