The national bilingual daily newspaper, Cameroon Tribune turned 50 on 1st July 2024.
The celebration will be marked by commemorative activities which were launched by the Minister of Communication, René Emmanuel Sadi.
Created on July 1, 1974, Cameroon Tribune has quickly become a pillar of the Cameroonian press, providing reliable and relevant news to readers in both French and English.
During the launching ceremony, the Director General of Cameroon News and Publishing Corporation (SOPECAM), reviewed the highlights of this newspaper’s half-century at the heart of current events.
Marie-Claire Nnana took this opportunity to salute the significant growth of press freedom, achieved over the past 50 years. She also promised that the company would continue to be at the service of the nation relaying news across all platforms, including embracing digitalization in the newsroom.
The Minister of Communication, René Emmanuel Sadi, praised the staff of Cameroon Tribune for upholding excellence over the past 50 years.
“Cameroon Tribune can be described as an element of success and counted as Cameroon’s pride,” he said whine launching commemorative activities.
He also encouraged the leading media organ to embrace digitalization, as the world continuously embraces digitalization.
The celebration of Cameroon Tribune’s 50th anniversary includes Open Door Days days at the SOPECAM headquarters, photo exhibitions tracing the history of the newspaper, and the presentation of medals of honor to long-serving staff. The 50th anniversary will culminate with a scientific colloquium and a gala evening.
The event was attended by several government officials, including the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, renowned journalist and former editor-in-chief, Shey Peter Mabu, currently Deputy Director General. He is responsible for coordinating the English-language editorial staff.
The Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the institution’s Board Chair. Joseph Le, Minister of Labour and Social Security Grégoire Owona, and the Director General of CRTV, the national broadcasting corporation also attended the ceremony.
