In news from Central Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo has held a session during which it swore in its new Prime Minister, Judith Suminwa Tuluka and her government this Tuesday, June 11, 2024. She takes over from Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde and is the first female Prime Minister of the country.

Over in West Africa, about 25 people have been killed and several others abducted by gunmen in Katsina state in North West Nigeria. Dozens of gunmen on motorbikes stormed Yargoje in Kankara late on Sunday, rode into the community, shooting indiscriminately and looting shops before abducting some villagers.

Moving northwards, at least 49 people from the Horn of Africa have died after a boat carrying 260 migrants, sank on Monday, June 10, 2024, in strong winds.

The boat capsized off the coast of Yemen, according to reports from the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM). The vessel left Somalia at on June 9, 2024, carrying 115 Somalians and 145 Ethiopians. In the meantime, the search continues for 140 people who are still missing.

Sad news in Malawi where the President, Lazarus Chakwera says the wreck of a plane carrying the country’s Vice-President, Saulos Chilima been found with no survivors. The Vice President and nine other persons were flying onboard a military aircraft within the country on Monday morning when their aircraft disappeared from airport radars. The plane was flying amid bad weather conditions, reports say.

Out of Africa, police in China have arrested a 55-year-old man after four US university tutors of the Iowa Cornell College were stabbed at a public park. Police sources say an assailant with the surname Cui clashed with one of the Americans and stabbed him, then went on to injure three other US visitors and a Chinese tourist who tried to come to their rescue.
